I'm starting a blog on bookkeeping tips, if anyone has suggestions for topics or questions that they need help with, please feel free to comment and I will answer in plain English that everyone can understand.

My first tip is: 

Be sure to have all of your Employee's names, addresses and social security numbers listed correctly for W-2 filing.

Employees are not required to fill out a W-9.

A W-9 is used to gather information about the independent contractor. The form requires information as to the freelancer's name, address, and social security or tax payer identification number. This information is needed at the end of the year for 1099 tax reporting.

A independent contractor or freelancer is someone that you hire to work every once in a while at different jobs or someone that owns a business that does contract work. Like my bookkeeping services are contract work.

A tax exempt number is only for non-profit organizations. Perhaps you are thinking of a TIN number, that is a Tax Identification Number. In that case yes, every company has to have a TIN number. If your business is listed as a sole proprietor the TIN number can be your social security number. There are forms on the IRS website that are for getting a TIN number.
